Description
The Doric Temple is an 18th-century structure located by the Upper Pond in Busbridge. It is built of sandstone rubble and has a cement-rendered finish with a slate roof that was once painted. The temple features a Doric portico with four columns in antis and flanking pilasters, facing west. Above the portico is a frieze adorned with triglyphs and mutules, with pediments on both sides. The central archway has a middle wall that is pierced by a doorway. At the time of the last survey, the temple was in very poor condition. This building is part of a series of garden features in a Romantic landscape garden created by Philip Cartaret Webb between 1750 and 1770. It is also noted in the Register of Historic Parks and Gardens of Special Historic Interest.
