Description
The McLaren headboard, located approximately 6 metres southeast of the southeast corner of the Church of St John, is a wooden structure dating from around 1917. It consists of five boards that are wooden-pegged together. The top board features a relief-carved Royal Flying Corps Coat of Arms, which includes a laurel wreath surrounding the initials RFC, topped by a royal crown on a cushion and flanked by eagle's wings. The west side of the board is inscribed with verses 9-10 of Psalm 139. Each side bears a commemorative inscription for Francis Walter Stafford McLaren, Member of Parliament and 2nd Lieutenant in the Flying Corps, who died in 1917 at Montrose. At the base, the Royal Flying Corps motto, "Per ardua ad astra," is displayed.
