Description

This building, now known as 1-6 Bridge Gate House, was originally built in 1896 as a Technical Institute and Art School, later becoming an Adult Education Institute. It was constructed following the Technical Instruction Act of 1889. The building is of red brick with a tiled roof and is designed in an asymmetrical Queen Anne style.

The facade is irregular, with mainly sash windows. The front elevation features a large Dutch gable on the left side, supported by two tiers of pilasters and topped with ball finials. A triangular plaque above the gable bears the inscription "Surrey County Council" and a panel reading "Godalming Technical Institute.” A triple casement window is located above, with two blank arches and keystones on the first floor, and plain triple casements with horns on the ground floor. First floor windows are flanked by square brick panels, and ground floor windows are flanked by floating curved pediments above tall panels. Horizontal bands separate the floors, and a plinth sits at the base.

To the right of the front elevation is a three-storey square tower set back, with a pyramidal roof. It has one casement window on each side; the first-floor window has a pediment. A projecting porch with a round-headed pediment, shell-moulding, and paired stone pilasters on a brick plinth is situated on the ground floor, with double doors and cast-iron gates in front. The right side elevation displays an oculus to the first floor and a square window on the ground floor, followed by two tall, round-headed windows with keystones illuminating the stairwell. A gable to the rear incorporates paired sash windows to the first floor and a gabled lower projection in front with a sash window.

The left side elevation exhibits a massive, tall, clustered external brick chimneystack with blustrading. Two dormer windows are located behind the chimneystack, connecting to the front gable, which incorporates a triangular gable over a sash window. A left-side gable features a large round-headed window. The ground floor contains eight sash windows.

Inside, the building is plain, with the exception of a large, well-detailed staircase featuring turned balusters and square newel posts.

This was among the earliest Technical Institutes built in Surrey after the passage of the 1889 Act.
