Description

The Dunsfold Airfield Memorial is a stone structure built in 1942 by Stephen Trenka to commemorate the construction of Dunsfold airfield. Made of limestone, the memorial is hexagonal in shape and faces south, located on the lawn in front of the Dunsfold control tower. It is set into a stepped hexagonal base.

The memorial features a hexagonal stone pillar that is approximately 1.3 meters high and 0.5 meters wide. The southern face displays a carved image of the Royal Canadian Engineers regimental badge within a square panel, above an inscription that reads: DUNSFOLD AERODROME / OPENED BY / LIEUTENANT / AGL MCNAUGHTON / GOC OF / FIRST CANADIAN ARMY / AND / HANDED OVER TO / AIR MARSHALL / H EDWARDS / AIR OFFICER / COMMANDING IN CHIEF / RCAE OVERSEAS / FOR THE USE OF / THE / ROYAL CANADIAN AIR FORCE / 16 OCT 1942.

The south-east, south-west, and north faces each feature a carved image of a maple leaf. The north-east face displays the insignia of the Canadian Forestry Corps, while the north-west face shows the insignia of the Royal Canadian Air Force. Below the insignia on the north-west face is another inscription that states: THIS AERODROME / WAS BUILT BY / THE / ROYAL CANADIAN ENGINEERS / ASSISTED BY / CANADIAN FORESTRY CORPS / R.C.A.S.C / R.C.O.C / MCMXIII.

The pillar is supported by a stepped hexagonal base that is approximately 2 meters wide, constructed from cut stone slabs.
