Description
The bridge over the River Wey, located at the north-west corner of Tilford Green, dates back to the 13th century and was likely constructed by the Monks of Waverley Abbey. It is made of local iron-stone rubble, with thin slabs forming the voussoirs over the arches. The bridge features four visible arches, with a fifth arch that is no longer visible but is indicated by an upstream cutwater and a downstream projection. The arches slightly increase in span and height towards the center. The upstream cutwaters are half-pyramidal in shape, while the downstream cutwaters are rounded with pointed plinths. The center pair of upstream cutwaters are chamfered. This bridge is part of a series built by the Monks between Farnham and Guildford and is an important feature of the Village Green. It is also designated as a scheduled Ancient Monument.
