Description
The Bell Hotel is a public house with origins dating back to the 15th century, located on the west side of High Street in Godstone. The building features a facade that was created around 1700, with 19th-century extensions added to the south. It is primarily timber framed with brick infill at the rear, standing on a rendered plinth. The front is made of whitewashed brick to the right, showcasing a fine wooden modillion eaves cornice, while the left side has a brick extension that is tile hung on the first floor. The roofs are plain tiled, with a rendered end stack to the right, a large ridge stack at the center, a rear stack left of center, and an end stack to the left.
The structure is two stories tall, featuring a plat band above the ground floor and 11 glazing bar sash windows in flush frames across the first floor. There is a part-glazed door at the center, which is sheltered by a flat porch hood supported by brackets, and double part-glazed doors to the left of center. The left side has a three-bay extension with coving over the ground floor, and the first floor has casement windows, while the ground floor has glazing bar sash windows. The right-hand return front is rough cast with a gabled, glazed porch and a panelled door. Inside, there is an 18th-century staircase, bolection moulded panelling on the first floor, and exposed timber framing in parts.
