Description

The Old Rectory is a detached house that was formerly a rectory, built in 1903 and designed by C. M. Oldrid Scott. It is constructed of brownish brick with red sound faced brick dressings and has a clay-tiled roof. The upper floor of the service wing features tile hanging, and the chimneys have stone caps. The main section of the house is arranged as a rectangular block with a hipped roof. The entrance front faces east and has an almost symmetrical elevation, with a handsome bracketed canopy over the porch that has a lead roof. The principal ground floor windows are sashes, while the remaining windows are casements. The centre features a shaped gable with a Diocletian window and two dormers in the roof.

The garden front faces west and is less symmetrical due to an off-centre chimney stack. It has shallow single-storey bays on either side, with sashes in all principal rooms. The central bay rises through the eaves and is capped with a curved lead roof designed as a broken pediment. On the south side, there is a single-storey wing that served as a parish room and a greenhouse, both part of the original design, along with a prominent chimney stack. The north side features a service wing with a separate lower roof, brick on the ground floor, and tile-hanging above.

Exterior alterations and additions include an extension of the parish room to the east, as well as modifications to the service wing, such as a garden door and window at the west end, a blocked door in the centre of the north side, and a lean-to on the east side, affecting the entire ground floor of the south side. The interior retains part of the original ground floor plan and most of the upper floor plan, but there are no features of particular interest.
