Description
The Hawthorns, now a private school, is a house originally dating to 1624, with extensions added in the 1880s. It is built of brick on a brick plinth, with stone dressings, and has parallel range plain tiled roofs. There is a corbelled front stack to the left, diagonal stacks to the rear right, and four stacks to the rear right of centre. The house is two storeys high, with attics in the gables. It has a symmetrical design, comprising five gabled bays, with the centre bay projecting. The windows are stone-dressed mullioned and transomed, with label mouldings over the attic windows and oval openings in the gable tops. Angle bay windows rise through two floors to the outer bays. The central entrance is stone arched, set between chamfered piers, and has a square panelled door in a moulded surround. Wooden strapwork dog gates span the porch opening, topped by trefoil metal finials. A 19th-century single-storey extension is visible on the left-hand return front. On the right-hand return front, an angle bay window rises through two floors to the left.
A late 19th-century dovecot is attached to the rear left, constructed of wood and tile hanging, with a square ogee dome top and an iron weathervane finial.
Inside, the entrance hall is panelled with a black and white stone floor and a dentilled cornice. It features an original lozenge-shaped plaster strapwork ceiling decoration. The billiard room to the left has a robust imitation of the original Jacobean-style decoration, including a stone fireplace. The Jacobean-style staircase has square, tapering balusters on large cushions, and square spike finials to the newel posts. The rooms on the ground floor to the right date to the 18th century and include fielded panelling, marble fireplaces, and lugged doorcase surrounds. Delicate floral plasterwork adorns the ceilings, and shellhead niche buffets are also present.
