Description

The house at Brewer Street, Bletchingley, is a timber-framed farmhouse dating back to the 15th century, with alterations made in the 16th century. It was restored and extended to the north in the 1850s, and again in the 20th century. The construction combines close stud timber framing on a brick plinth, with rendered infill between the timbers. The roof is hipped and covered with Horsham slabs, featuring end stacks to the right, a rear end stack to the left, and a front ridge stack to the left of centre.

Originally a hall house, the house comprises three framed bays over two storeys, accompanied by gabled end cross wings with jettied first floors. These wings feature decorative curly bargeboards and moulded dragon posts to the corners. Four leaded casement windows are arranged across the first floor, while a square bay window occupies the centre of the ground floor. A ribbed door is located in the left wing, sheltered by a four-centre arched surround. The right-hand return front presents a combination of brickwork and wealdstone below, with applied timber above. A rear extension has been added in a matching style.

The interior retains much of the original timber framing, which is in good repair. The property is considered an excellent example of its kind.
