Description

This is a section of a wall, dating from the 16th century, which now forms part of an outbuilding at Granary Cottage on Place Farm. The wall originally formed part of the outer court of Bletchingley Place, a Tudor country house. The outbuilding itself was constructed between 1947 and 1949 and altered in 2020. The wall is built of red brick laid in English bond with lime mortar, with a red brick plinth and a projecting tile course. It incorporates several openings, mostly now blocked, including possible putlog holes. Two openings remain at the north end of the wall: a larger square-headed opening with a concrete lintel and a smaller square-headed opening. The south and east walls, together with the internal walls, frame, and roof of the outbuilding are not considered to be of special architectural or historic interest, although alterations to these elements may still require planning permission.
