Description

House, dated 1636. The house is constructed of red brick in English bond, featuring a deep eaves line and a plain tiled hipped roof. There are end stacks with cut brick panels and decorative detail on the shafts. The plan is symmetrical, organised around a narrow central hall with a staircase to the rear. It has two storeys over a cellar, with attics under two flat-roofed sash window dormers. A plat band runs above the ground floor. The house has five bays, with the centre bay projecting and rising to three floors, topped by a pediment. The ground floor of the central bay is rusticated. Glazing bar sash windows are set within moulded surrounds throughout; the ground floor windows are placed under segmental brick arches, alternating with cut brick recessed panels in the form of pilasters, complete with recessed capitals. A central double-arched, half-glazed door is framed by a stone surround. The right return front has two glazing bar sash windows to the first floor, with diamond and circle patterning to the chimney stacks. The left hand return front, facing the garden, has four bays over a rendered basement and three flat-roofed dormers above. A plaque on the chimney reads “GRB 1636”. The rear includes a wing to the left with a steep pediment over an arched glazing bar casement window. There's an arched door to the left of the centre, beneath a stone plat band molding that continues at a lower level over the remainder of the ground floor.

Inside, few original features remain. A cornice and acanthus frieze are present in a ground floor room to the left. A marble fireplace surround with fan decoration and drapery swags is also found within the house. A Baroque style fireplace surround, featuring gadroon type moulding and scroll bracket decoration, is located in the ground floor room at the front left. A square return staircase is situated at the rear of the hall, with foliage and scroll iron balustrade.
