Description

The Coal and Wine Tax Post, located to the rear of Monksbridge in Sunbury-on-Thames, was constructed around 1861 by Henry Grissell. It stands approximately 3 feet high and is made of metal, featuring a four-legged plinth with a chamfered pier above, topped with a moulded capital band and a pyramidal top. The front displays the City of London Shield and includes lettering that reads "24 and 25 VICT/CAP 42". This post served as a marker indicating the boundary at which duty was payable for coal and wine, with the coal tax dating back to the 1660s.
