Description

Pomfret Cottage is a pair of cottages dating from the early 18th century, with additions from the 19th century. The brickwork is now colourwashed, and the left-hand cottage has a plain tiled Mansard roof, while the right-hand cottage’s roof is hidden behind a parapet. The left-hand cottage, number 49, is set back slightly. It has a central attic window, partly hidden by the parapet, and three tall sash windows on the first floor with painted brick surrounds and internal shutters. Two smaller windows are on the ground floor, one on each side of a half-glazed leaded door. The door is contained within a panelled surround and flat hood supported on scrolled brackets, with a fluted frieze between the scrolls. The right-hand cottage, number 47, has projecting windows. These are top-hung, three-quarter fixed, 12-pane casements; one window is blocked. Decorative roundel medallions are at the ends, featuring profile cameos in a vaguely classical style. A projecting ground floor has a flat ribbed roof over two bowed windows with square-mullions and 20th-century tiling below. These windows flank a three-quarter glazed door topped with a transom light. The roof continues over the doorway on two brackets. A brick stack is located at the centre, where the cottages join, with further stacks to the right and at the rear.
