Description
The Lyne War Memorial is made of Portland stone and is located in the churchyard of the Holy Trinity Church in the village of Lyne, north Surrey. The memorial features a cross with Celtic-style knotwork carved on its face, mounted on a slim shaft that stands on a trapezoid-shaped plinth and a three-stepped base.
The plinth has incised inscriptions painted black on three sides. The main dedication on the front reads: "THIS CROSS IS ERECTED/ TO THE GLORY OF GOD/ FOR OUR VICTORIES BY/ SEA AND LAND DURING/ THE GREAT WAR 1914 – 1919." One side honors those who sacrificed their lives, stating: "IN EVERLASTING HONOUR/ OF THOSE WHO HAVING/ LEFT ALL THAT WAS DEAREST/ TO THEM MADE THE GREAT/ SACRIFICE FOR THE SAKE/ OF RIGHTEOUSNESS AND/ FREEDOM/ 'MAY THEY REST IN PEACE'." Another side commemorates the sixteen men from the parish who died for their country, saying: "IN PERPETUAL AND GLORIOUS/ MEMORY OF THE SIXTEEN/ MEN OF THIS PARISH WHO/ LAID DOWN THEIR LIVES FOR/ THEIR COUNTRY/ 'THEIR NAME LIVETH FOR EVERMORE'."
