Description
Botleys Park Hospital, originally a mansion designed by architect Kenton Couse for Joseph Mawby, is now a nursing home. This U-shaped building, constructed in the 19th century, has three stories and features seven windows on its east, north, and west fronts. The exterior is made of ashlar stone, with a rusticated ground floor and a modillion eaves cornice topped with a parapet. The central three window bays on each front project slightly and are adorned with a pediment above. The windows retain their glazing bars, with keystones on the ground floor and moulded architraves on the upper floors. The first-floor windows have cornices, and the center window has a pediment. On the north front, the central projection is supported by four engaged Ionic columns, topped with a pediment that contains a cartouche flanked by swags of husks. The west front features an entrance on the first floor leading to the piano nobile, accessed by a horseshoe-shaped staircase that connects to a doorway by a bridge; beneath this is the service entrance to the ground floor. The east and west fronts have been extended by large modern additions. Inside, the entrance hall is notable for its screen of four Ionic columns and an impressive plaster ceiling, along with other fine ceilings and doorcases in the principal rooms on the first floor. The building is well maintained and has been described as "one of the best houses in Surrey" in historical references.
