Description
The Literary Institute, originally a house, dates from the 18th century. It features a red brick east wall and a tiled roof, standing two tall storeys high. On the ground floor, there are three recesses, including one sash window with 18 panes and another with 12 panes. The first floor has one recess with four sash windows, which are 19th-century replacements. At the rear, there is a plain brick extension. The museum is set back from the front elevation of the main building, with sash windows on the first and second floors, each having 12 panes. There is a single-storey extension in one angle and a two-storey extension in another angle. The two-storey flank wall has been refaced in brick, dating from the time of the extension.
