Description
Meare Close is a house that originally served as a timber-framed house and stable, dating back to around 1600. It has two bays, with an additional bay added to the west in the early 19th century, along with a brick front wing and stable constructed in the 19th century. The north front features two timber-framed bays with exposed box framing and tension braces, along with painted brick infill. There is a weatherboarded bay to the right and a slate roof. The building is two storeys high and has three windows, including 19th-century casement windows and a canted bay on the ground floor to the right.
The south front has a weatherboarded left bay with a projecting canted bay. The remainder of the front is brick, featuring some 19th-century casements and some early 20th-century windows. Inside, the house retains exposed timber-framing with diagonal tension braces in the roof and old floorboards in the first-floor room. There is an inserted Jacobean balustrade on the winder staircase, along with early 19th-century two-centred doorcases and fireplaces. In the 19th century, a Mr. Friswell converted the west upstairs room into a chapel. Additionally, there is an inlaid compass in the parquet floor on the ground floor, which is likely from the early 20th century.
