Description

Tadworth Court is a country house, now functioning as a hospital, built around 1700 in the English Baroque style. The structure is made of mixed red and brown brick, featuring red brick dressings on the wings, rustic quoins, and stone dressing at the center. It has a hipped slate roof with off-ridge chimneys. The main part of the building has two storeys, an attic, and a basement, with a total of 11 bays. The central five bays project forward and are topped with a steep, richly decorated pediment that includes an enriched bullseye and ornamentation with heavy modillions. There are two dormers and flush framed glazing bar sashes throughout, with the first-floor center window flanked by scrolls. The central doorway is approached by a D-shaped flight of seven steps with a stone balustrade, featuring a diagonally set Corinthian doorcase and a swan neck pediment above a panel door. The three-bay wings have rubbed brick heads above the windows, moulded brick bands, and a modillion cornice that breaks forward over pilaster strips. To the left, there is a single-storey bay with a blocked archway and a ball finial on the parapet. A notable feature facing the garden is a full-height angled bay.

Inside, the house features a two-storey hall with high panelling and rococo plasterwork from around 1750, including festoons. The panelled ceiling has a central wreathed oval dating from around 1700. There is a gallery at the rear with twisted balusters of the same period. A large late 19th-century fireplace is adorned with twisted marble columns and a deep mantelpiece. The main staircase is open and rectangular, featuring twisted balusters and volute and sway tread ends, with a Vitruvian scroll stucco band on the wall above. Additionally, there is a boxed room with early 17th-century panelling, pedimented over doors, and a neo-Jacobean panelled ceiling.
