Description
The coal and wine tax post outside Red House School dates from around 1861 and was made by Henry Grissell. It stands approximately 4½ feet high and features a four-legged plinth with a chamfered pier above, which has a moulded capital band and a pyramidal top. The front of the post displays the City of London shield, while the pier is inscribed with "24 & 25 VICT/CAP 42". The maker's name is located on the rear. This post indicates the boundary where tax was payable, with the coal tax dating back to the 1660s.
