Description

This is a house, originally dating to the 17th century, that was later used as a school and subsequently subdivided into separate dwellings. The building underwent significant alterations in the mid-19th century. The ground floor is constructed of painted brick on a deep plinth, while the first floor has tile hanging. The roof is tiled and features a central brick chimneystack with six flues. The house is two storeys high and has two windows. The first floor features four-light mullioned and transomed oriel windows supported by carved wooden brackets. The ground floor windows are also four-light, mullioned and transomed, with 19th-century cast iron leaded lights containing hexagonal panes. A central 17th-century carved doorcase is present, housing a 17th-century studded door. An oak staircase is reportedly within the building. One-storey brick extensions, likely built as classrooms, were added to each side and have tiled roofs. A further feature is a four-light mullioned and transomed window incorporated into a gabled weather porch with a round-headed arch, pilasters, and studded doors. The building was historically owned by the Barclays Estate and served as a school for its workers’ children in the later 19th century.
