Description
The western facade of Downsview Gardens, formerly Shearburn Lodge and originally the Dorking Hospital (formerly Dorking General Hospital, South Terrace), dates from 1839-41 and was designed by W. Shearburn. It was originally built as an Institution or Workhouse. The facade is stuccoed and comprises five bays, with projecting pedimented centre and wing sections. The central wing’s first storey projects, supported by a prostyle portico of four Doric columns and two pillars, with returning columns, and an entablature above. A central doorway on the ground floor is flanked by two sash windows. The doorway has a rectangular fanlight and is topped with a flat hood supported by brackets. The entablature above the portico returns and extends to form a parapet. The recessed bay to either side of the central wing has two storeys and features a doorway and window identical to those in the central section. The end wings are two storeys high with a single window and a rectangular pediment above, with a band above the first floor. All windows are sash windows with intact glazing bars.
