Description
The barn at Dene Farm, located approximately 5 metres southeast of the farmhouse, is likely from the late 15th century or early 16th century, with rebuilding in the 19th century and some alterations in the 20th century. It is timber-framed with weatherboard cladding on a 19th-century brick plinth laid in English bond, and it has a plain tile roof. The barn consists of five bays and features a central cart entry with a double board door, along with small board hatches at either end. The roof is hipped. The rear of the barn has three left bays that are obscured by a 20th-century brick addition, which is not of special interest. On the right side, there is a strap-hinged board door on the left.
Inside, the oldest parts of the frame include large square panels, large-scantling studs, and large arched braces extending from the wall posts down to the mid-rail. Later studs have been added, along with some metal strapping, while the left-hand wall is entirely from the 19th century. The wall posts thicken at the top and are braced to tie-beams, which support crown posts that have a single down brace on alternate sides and two braces up to the collar purlin. The barn features collared common rafters and has a central boarded threshing floor.
