Description
Effingham House is a house that has been converted into a clubhouse. The central part of the building dates from the early 19th century, while the Victorian side wings were added around 1880. There have been minor alterations to the rear in the 20th century. The central section is finished in whitewashed stucco, and the side wings are clad in pebbledash. The building has hipped slate roofs that are obscured by parapets. It is two storeys high, with the wings being lower and set back from the central portion.
The central section features a four-window range with glazing bar sash windows, which retain their thin glazing bars and are fitted with 19th-century shutters. On the ground floor, there are three windows and double, half-glazed doors to the right of centre, framed by a plaster strip surround and topped with a flat hood. A flat-roofed, modillioned portico in the Ionic style spans the ground floor, supported by two columns and plaster pier responds.
Each end wing has three bays arranged irregularly. The left wing features giant pilasters at the corners that support a cornice parapet, with two glazing bar sash windows on each floor between the pilasters, and a further linking bay that is set back slightly to the right. The right wing has a similar arrangement, with two windows between giant pilasters and a linking bay that is also set back slightly. Both wings have square bay windows on the ground floor and extensive service wings at the rear.
Inside, the entrance hall has a decorated ceiling and an early 19th-century staircase with turned balusters and a ramped handrail. Other surviving features include plaster cornices, moulded dados, panelling, and decorated door surrounds, although these have been restored.
