Description

The stable block and service court at Hatchlands dates to around 1889 and was designed by Halsey Ricardo. Constructed of red brick with hipped slate roofs, it forms a U-shaped plan around a central courtyard. The central pavilion is two storeys high, with single-storey wings extending to either side, and return wings projecting at the ends. The left wing is two storeys high, while the right wing is one storey with an attic. The central pavilion has three bays, a moulded eaves cornice, and a central wooden, domed open lantern to the roof. It features sash windows with glazing bars, two windows on each floor, set within gauged brick heads. A door is positioned centrally on the first floor, with a ground floor entrance below. The single-storey wings have low red ridge lanterns under pyramidal roofs, with a single sash window and door on each side, and deep recessed bays in the re-entrant angles. The right wing has two chimney stacks and two attic dormers, with three windows below. It incorporates three garage doors on the ground floor. The left wing features four chimney stacks, seven first-floor windows, and two ground-floor doors.
