Description

The Shalford War Memorial is a Grade II listed structure, unveiled in 1921, and made from Doulting stone sourced from Shepton Mallet, Somerset. The memorial has an octagonal shape, featuring a triple stepped plinth, a base, and a shaft topped with a Gothic cross. The inscription commemorating those who died in World War I is elegantly carved at the base of the cross, stating 'Our Glorious Dead/ 1914/ 1919 /Their Name Liveth for Evermore (names).' A simpler inscription for those who fell in World War II is located in a smaller section where the shaft meets the base, reading '1939/ 1945 (names).'

The memorial was established by the parish War Memorial Committee, led by the Vicar, Captain Santers, and Mr. Everett, who initially aimed to raise £1,000 for a memorial hall. However, by June 1919, they had raised less than half that amount, leading to the decision to construct a cross instead. The memorial was unveiled on July 17, 1921, and dedicated by the Bishop of Guildford. The Surrey Advertiser reported on July 23, 1921, that the cross was 14 feet high and of Gothic design. The memorial has undergone cleaning several times during the 1920s, which may have unintentionally caused some deterioration of the lettering. The designer or sculptor of the memorial is not known.

The Shalford War Memorial is recognized for its inscriptions that honor the local individuals who lost their lives in both world wars, and its simple Gothic design that complements the surrounding buildings, contributing to the overall group value of the area.
