Description
The garden walls to the north of Chilworth Manor date from the early 18th century and enclose the site of a 17th-century flower garden with terraces set into the hillside. Constructed from sandstone rubble with flint galleting, the walls are coped and dressed with red brick. They rise in height from approximately 10 feet on the north side to about 15 feet on the south side, built on a sloping site. The west side features buttresses every 15 feet, with a corner pier or turret at the southwest angle topped with a stone corbelled capital and brick stringcourses. A short wall connects the garden walls to the main house and includes an arched entrance. On the north and west sides, there are rusticated brick entrance piers with brick dentils at their moulded tops. The space between the piers on the north side is filled with a plinth wall that supports railings above. A terrace runs across the north end of the garden. The walls and garden terraces are attributed to Sarah, Duchess of Marlborough.
