Description

The Church of St Martha on the Hill is a church that incorporates remains from the 12th century, which were either integrated or rebuilt into a new structure between 1848 and 1850 by architect Henry Woodyer in a Norman style. It is constructed from dark Bargate stone with sandstone dressings and features a plain tiled roof. The church has a cruciform plan with a central crossing tower.

The tower includes one lancet window on each face, all surrounded by zig-zag moulding, and it has a corbelled parapet leading to a pyramidal roof. The west end of the church is buttressed, and lancet windows are present throughout. The west window features scalloped capitals on the jamb shafts, while the east wall of the north and south transepts has three-light windows, as does the east end of the church. A round-arched 12th-century recess leads to the studded west door, which has impost abaci. The south door is framed by a stone-dressed, roll-moulded surround and is set in a pentice break.

Inside, the nave has a simple roof with five framed bays and crown post trusses. There are four pointed arches at the crossing, dating to around 1170, with semi-circular respond piers under scalloped capitals in the north transept.

Notable fittings include a "tub" font from the 12th century, which was recut in 1850 and brought from Hambledon; it is made of stone with a flat wooden top. The pulpit, made of chalk in 1850, is panelled and roll-moulded, featuring Romanesque scalloped capitals on the shafts and gable moulding on the bottom with a battering plinth. A wooden screen, dating to around 1900, has cusped foliage carving and a Tudor-style arch at the centre.
