Description
The Old Cottage and Rose Cottage are a pair of cottages dating from the early 18th century. They are timber framed, featuring whitewashed rendered cladding on the front and weatherboarding on the right-hand return front, with a rubblestone plinth at the rear and a plain tiled roof. The buildings are two storeys high and have two stacks at the rear. The first floor has three two-light casement windows, while the ground floor has two windows. There are 19th-century doors on the left and right, each set in gabled porches. At the rear, there is a catslide roof extension and a flat roof extension to the right. Inside, some ceiling frames and wall partition frames made of thin scantling are exposed. The cottages may be associated with the Gunpowder Mills at Chilworth.
