Description

The Church of St Thomas, formerly known as the Greshambury Institute, was built in 1896 by W.H. Seth-Smith. It features red brick construction with hipped concrete tile roofs that sweep out to the eaves. The building has a wooden lantern topped with an ogee-shaped lead dome and a crucifix. The structure includes a square pavilion with a lower range on the left and a wing at right angles to the rear. It stands two storeys tall and has battered corner buttresses, along with a continuous leaded clerestory beneath the overhanging eaves, which has tiled pentice sills.

The ground floor has cambered head, 4-light leaded casements on both the left and right sides, and a 6-light window in the lower range to the left facing the street, with two additional windows on the left-hand return front. A gabled porch is located at the centre, featuring half-glazed sides, a bargeboard, and a planked double door at the front. The louvred lantern is supported by battering angle buttresses and has small sphere finials at the corners.

Inside, the church has painted brick walls with four ribs that rise from the corners to meet at the centre of the roof. There is an altar recess located at the rear wall.
