Description
Agricultural building, likely dating from the early 17th century, now used as a store. It has been altered in the late 18th/early 19th century, again in the later 19th century, and in the 20th century. The building is timber framed with brick infill, set upon a plinth of brick, rubblestone, and flint. Flint and rubblestone with brick quoins were added later. It has a plain tile roof. The building is two storeys high and consists of three bays, with the left bay being an addition from the late 18th/early 19th century; a rear brick outshut of differing builds was also added. The east side of the added bay is blank. The two right-hand bays feature a square-panelled timber frame with a sole plate, mid rails, wall posts arch-braced to an eaves plate and intermediate studs. A diamond-paned casement window is located centrally in the left bay and the three central posts have sawn-off ends of formerly projecting timbers. At the rear, a catslide roof slopes down over the brick outshut, which has blocked doorways, one window, and a 20th-century dormer. The added left-hand return bay has an inserted double door and a reused small-pane window above, inserted around 1985. The gable of this bay is brick and timbered with an arch-braced king-post truss. The right return has an inserted full-width doorway with 20th-century folding doors, a first-floor hatch with a board door, two diamond-paned casements above, and a brick and timbered gable, where some of the timbers are old and some are from the 19th century. Inside, the posts are jowled, and mortices in the timbers indicate former wattle and daub infill, as well as former studs and braces. The floor rests on large, chamfered cross and spine beams with lambs tongue stops; however, the spine-beam stops at the left end of the centre bay are truncated, suggesting a probable insertion of a floor. The roof over the two right-hand bays contains a queen-post truss, a queen-strut truss (the struts likely replacing posts), two collared trusses, clasped through purlins, coupled rafters, and one arched wind brace (another has been removed). The roof leans significantly to the north, with later long, straight braces bolted on to counteract movement. The roof over the left bay incorporates reused timbers, a collared truss, clasped through purlins, coupled rafters, and a plank ridge piece.
