Description
The gate piers to Epsom Cemetery were built in 1870 and designed by William Young. They are made of Kentish ragstone and Bath stone. The structure features three square-section piers that flank both carriage and pedestrian gates. Each pier has a rock-faced base and an offset below the rock-faced shaft, which includes moulded angle shafts. At the top, each pier is capped with a pyramidal leaf finial, which is different for each pier. Each finial has a trefoil panel on each face, intricately carved with different designs of foliage and birds. Although the original gates have been replaced, the cemetery was purchased in 1870 by the Local Burial Board, who commissioned R N Shaw and William Young for the work. Young's designs are featured in his book, Picturesque Architectural Studies, published in 1872.
