Description
The Riding School at The Durdans is a 19th-century building completed in 1881, designed by architect George Devey. It is constructed of red brick featuring blue headers arranged in diamond patterns and has a pitched slate roof. The building is single-storey and has seven stone mullioned windows on each side, with leaded casements that are separated by buttresses.
The entrance porch is notable for its four-centred arch, a moulded brick cornice, rusticated quoins, and a shaped gable that is topped with a pediment and flanked by ball finials. The end elevation features a brick-coped gable that rises to a central pediment, a canted bay window with stone mullions and transoms, and a quadripartite louvre. Inside, the building boasts a remarkable timber roof, which is celled at angles and supported by single span round-arched trusses. The Riding School was built for Lord Rosebery.
