Description
Epsom Cemetery Chapel, a Church of England building, was constructed in 1870 and designed by William Young. It is made of Kentish Ragstone with Bath stone dressings and features a grey-green slate roof, all in the Early English style. The chapel has a three-bay nave with a south porch and a north-east round tower, along with a one-bay chancel. Notable architectural features include a chamfered plinth, buttresses, red crested ridge tiles, and Celtic cross finials.
The nave's west window consists of two lights beneath a cinquefoil. The open south porch is supported by turned wooden columns on a dwarf stone wall, and inside, there is a pointed-arched double board door with decorative iron hinges, along with cast-iron boot scrapers and an umbrella stand. To the right of the porch is a two-light window with a trefoil in the head, followed by a lancet window. The northern side has similar fenestration, with the tower featuring offsets beneath the lower stage, which has a trefoil window, and below the belfry stage, which has slatted cusped openings. Above this is a foliage-corbelled steeple topped with an iron finial. The chancel, which is lower and set back, has a trefoil on the south side and a three-light east window with a quatrefoil and hoodmould.
The interior retains its original fittings. The cemetery was purchased in 1870 by the Local Burial Board, who commissioned R N Shaw and William Young to carry out the work. Young's designs are featured in his book, Picturesque Architectural Studies, published in 1872.
