EPSOM ASHLEY ROAD 1. 5385 (north side, off) TQ 2159 Epsom Cemetery Chapel 35/167 (Church of England) II

  1. Cemetery chapel. 1870. Designed by William Young. Kentish Ragstone with Bath stone dressings and grey-green slate roof. In Early English style. 3 bay nave with south porch and north-east round tower, 1-bay chancel. Chamfered plinth, butresses, red crested ridge tiles, Celtic cross finials. Nave: west window of 2 lights below cinquefoil. South porch, open, with turned wooden columns sup- ported on dwarf stone wall; inside, a pointed-arched double board door with decorative iron hinges, cast-iron boot scrapers and umbrella stand. To right of porch a 2-light window with trefoil in head. Lancet to right again. Northern fenestration similar, the tower having offsets beneath lower stage which has trefoil window, and below belfry stage which has slatted cusped openings; above this a foliage-corbelled steeple with iron finial. Chancel, lower and set back, has a trefoil in south side, and 3-light east window with quatrefoil and hoodmould. Interior: original fittings. The cemetery was purchased in 1870 by the Local Burial Board who commissioned R N Shaw and W Young to undertake the work. The designs are by Young and appear in his book, Picturesque Architectural Studies (1872).
