Description
Epsom Cemetery Lodge is a building from 1870, designed by William Young. It is constructed of Kentish ragstone with Bath stone dressings and has a roof made of Whitland Abbey slate. The lodge is a single storey structure with an irregular layout of three by two bays.
The entrance front features a tall central tower porch with a chamfered pointed arched doorway, a square recess above, and a corbelled band beneath the pierced wooden base of the turret, which has a swept pyramidal roof topped with a wrought iron weather vane. The left bay has a gabled canted bay window with cusped lights under trefoils and a hipped roof, while the right bay is set back and blind. The building has ashlar coping and red crested ridge tiles, with an offset stack on the ridge over the left bay. The right return of the lodge has gabled bays with 2-light windows.
The cemetery was purchased in 1870 by the Local Burial Board, who commissioned R N Shaw and William Young for the work. Young's designs are featured in his book, Picturesque Architectural Studies, published in 1872.
