Description
Well House is an early 18th-century building located on Church Street in Ewell. It stands three storeys tall and is constructed of red brick, featuring a symmetrical arrangement of six sash windows in cased frames, with the central windows blocked. The building has a central portico, which dates from the original or mid-18th century, consisting of three Doric columns that were originally intended for two entrances. This portico is raised on steps and includes an architrave, frieze, cornice, and blocking course, with the columns set on square pedestals.
Inside, there is a rusticated wall with two round-headed doorways that still retain their original radiating wood fanlights. The left-hand doorway has been replaced by a window, while the right-hand doorway features a glazed door. To the left of the porch, there is a plastered timber-framed segmental bow window with a curved casement, along with a simple frieze and cornice. The windows have recessed aprons and stone cills supported on brackets. The building has plain moulded eaves and a hipped tile roof. In front, there are 18th-century railings with wrought iron embellishments.
Well House is part of a group that includes the Watch House, Engine House, Church of St Michael, Hidden Cottage, and Nos 2 to 10 (even).
