Description
Malt End Cottage and Tabards, located at 6 and 8 Church Street in Ewell, date from the late 18th century, although the earlier house has been refaced. The building features mathematical tiles and consists of two storeys with an attic in the center. It has three cased sash windows with grooved stucco heads, the central window being a three-light design. The ground floor includes two wooden canted bay windows with flat pitched hipped roofs. There is a band above the first floor and a parapet with capping.
The central gable has a semi-circular casement window, and the wings on either side are slightly set back, each with lower two storeys covered in mathematical tiles and one cased sash window. Each wing also has a similar bay window on the ground floor. The entrances are located at the inner angles, featuring semi-circular radiating fanlights. The right-hand entrance lacks a doorcase and has been modified to include a small window, while the left-hand entrance has an open pediment on brackets and a door. The building is topped with old tile roofs.
Malt End Cottage and Tabards are part of a group that includes The Watch House, Engine House, Church of St Michael, Hidden Cottage, and Nos 2 to 10 (even).
