Description
1, Downs Avenue is a 1907 house designed by Withers and Meridith, architects to the Guild. The house is constructed of roughcast with a pitched tile roof, featuring overhanging eaves supported by iron brackets. The design incorporates tapering buttresses at the corners. The entrance is through a verandah in antis, supported by slender iron columns with a subtle swelling. The windows are a mix of casements with lead glazing bars, shallow canted bays, and one oriel window, arranged in a picturesque manner. Stained glass with Art Nouveau designs is present in some of the windows. Decorative lead gutters featuring roses and leaves in relief act as exaggerated cornices over the canted bays. A crenellated parapet tops the archway to the rear entrance, alongside gates with rectilinear joinery. The interior features rectilinear joinery in the style of C.R. Mackintosh, including a staircase, two inglenook fireplaces, and hall panelling. A brass Arts and Crafts surround is incorporated into the fireplace in the south-west ground floor room, and a brass Art Nouveau handle is also present.
