Description

Woodcote Green House is a late 17th-century building, substantially altered in the mid 18th century. The two-storey and attic house has colour-washed roughcast walls and a mansard roof covered with old tiles. It features five sash windows, with the central one blocked, and end stacks. A central doorcase is distinguished by Doric columns, a rusticated surround, a dentilled cornice, and a six-panel door with a semi-circular radiating fanlight. A parapet tops the facade, and three flat-roofed dormers are visible.

The rear elevation is irregular, with a hipped gabled wing to the left, a half-hipped two-storey and attic wing in the centre, and a two-storey wing to the right with a hipped roof. Old sash windows are present on this elevation.

Inside, the left-hand front room contains a mid 18th-century mantelpiece. A particularly fine Chinese Chippendale staircase rises within the house, complemented by a Rococo plaster ceiling in the stairwell. An elliptical arch with a keystone and moulded imposts is located on the landing.

Woodcote Green House, along with number 2, forms a group with numbers 10 Woodcote Road, numbers 2 to 14 (even) on Westgate House, Woodcote Mews, and number 5 Chalk Lane.
