Description
Nos. 88 to 92 on Octagon Road are a row of almshouses built around 1912 by Sir Aston Webb. The buildings are constructed of red brick and feature a wooden cornice beneath plain tiled roofs, which are concealed behind parapets with window projections. There are three tall banded brick stacks at the left and right ends, as well as an off-ridge stack at the front left, with the left stack being stepped. The structure is single storey and has three projections: one at each end and one to the left of the centre. Each projection contains one tripartite glazing bar sash, flanked by quasi pilaster brick mouldings. The right-hand projection features a gable with a small opening. Between the projections, the eaves extend over the entrance verandahs, with the right verandah being wider and supported by a central twisted brick pier. Each verandah has a double casement behind it and includes a boarded door. Whiteley Village was established by William Whiteley of Whiteley's stores to provide affordable housing for elderly residents and was designed on an octagonal plan by Frank Atkinson, utilizing prominent architects of the time.
