Description
This building is a row of almshouses located at 1 to 15 The Green in Whiteley Village, constructed around 1912 by the architect Sir Aston Webb. The structure is made of red brick with brown brick banding and features plain tiled roofs with crow-stepped stacks at each end, along with six additional stacks in the center topped with blue brick bands. The design is symmetrical and consists of one storey, with four projecting bays on either side of a central passage that is arched, gabled, and bracketed. The central passage has an arched opening in the gable. The windows are tripartite sash types located in the projecting square bays, which have quasi-pilaster surrounds that interrupt the billeted eaves of the main roof. There are recessed porches with steps leading up to half-glazed doors on the sides. Whiteley Village was established by William Whiteley of Whiteley's stores for thrifty elderly individuals and was designed on an octagonal plan by Frank Atkinson, using prominent architects of the time.
