Description
Nos. 53 to 59 on Circle Road are a group of almshouses built around 1912 by Sir Aston Webb. The buildings are constructed of red brick and feature a brick parapet in the outer bays, topped with a plain tiled roof that has gable parapets and projecting stacks at each end. The structure is two storeys high and consists of five bays, with the outer bays projecting. Each side of the large tripartite glazing bar sash in the centre is adorned with moulded brick quasi-pilasters. On the ground floor, there are three arches in the centre, with a central entrance and casements behind the outer pair. The first floor has a central balcony flanked by casements. At the rear, the roof slopes lower and is supported by a large cove.
Whiteley Village was established by William Whiteley of Whiteley's stores to provide housing for thrifty elderly individuals and was designed in an octagonal layout, utilizing prominent architects of the time.
