Description
Nos. 10 to 16 (even) on East Avenue are a group of almshouses built around 1912 by architect Ernest Newton. The buildings are constructed from red brick, featuring red brick quoins and dressings, and have a moulded wooden eaves cornice beneath a plain tiled roof with end stacks. The structure is two storeys high and consists of five bays, with the central three bays separated by rusticated brick pilasters. The outer bays have casement windows on both floors, while the central three bays feature first-floor balconies, although the outer pair of balconies were blocked at the time of the last survey. There are three arched entrances, with the central entrance leading to a staircase with an iron balustrade. Whiteley Village was established by William Whiteley of Whiteley's stores to provide for thrifty elderly individuals and was designed in an octagonal layout by Frank Atkinson, incorporating the work of prominent architects of the time.
