Description
Nos. 61 to 73 (odd) and No. 67a on Circle Road are part of an almshouse group built in red brick with some stone dressings. The building features a plain tiled roof that is hipped over the central and end projections, with ridge stacks. The central and end projections have stone plat bands. It is a single storey with attics in the projections and a linking bay that is also one storey. The central entrance has an iron-railed balcony above and is flanked by a pair of casement windows. The linking bays have square-headed arches flanked by quasi-pilasters in brick and pairs of casements, with entrances located adjacent to the outer sides of the block. The end projections feature single semi-dormers and entrances in the outer bays. The end walls have staircases leading to porches and upper flats.
Whiteley Village was established by William Whiteley of Whiteley's stores for thrifty elderly residents and was designed on an octagonal plan by Frank Atkinson, using leading architects of the time.
