Description

The gates and railings on the north side of Churchfields Recreation Ground were built in 1908. They consist of metal gates and railings set on a chamfered concrete plinth, with red brick gate-piers topped with ashlar cornices and capstones. The design features a double carriage gate that is ramped up at the center, flanked by pedestrian double gates that are ramped down. Each gate includes dog bars with orb finials, mid- and top-rails adorned with linked circle motifs, circular handles, and turned baluster-type bars in the upper sections (some of which are missing). The gates also have moulded cornices with gadrooned urn finials, although some finials are broken off, and elaborate spiral-work at the center of the carriage gate. A metal plaque on one of the piers states, "Churchfield Pleasure Grounds. Presented by John Lyle Esq of Finnart House. 1908." From the gates, the railings extend eastward, featuring a simple double-gate near the east end, and then turn north with a simple pedestrian gate near the north end. The railings are made up of plain bars and standards topped with spiral-decorated panels. This set of ornate early 20th-century gates and railings adds character to the recreation ground.
