Description
The bale tomb of William Richardson Faulkner, who died in 1903, is located about 6 meters south of the south transept of the Church of St John. It is made of golden ashlar and features enriched moulded panels. The long sides of the tomb are adorned with putti and garlands of fruit in high relief. The tomb has a spiral bale in two parts, with a scallop end to the west and a relief of the crucifixion to the east. An inscribed frieze reads: "JUXTA: FIDEM: DEFUNCTI: SUNT: OMNES: ISTI: NON: ACCEPTIS: REPROMISSIONIBUS: SED: A: LONGE: ASPICIENTES: ET: SALUTANTES : ET: CONFIDENTES: QUIA: PELEGRINI : ET: HOSPITES: SUNT: SUPER: TERRAM." While the lettering and carving are clearly from the early 20th century, the overall form of the tomb convincingly replicates earlier styles. This tomb also serves as a memorial to John Meade Faulkner, who died in 1936.
