Description

Nos. 7 and 8 Cornwell are two attached cottages dating from the mid-17th century and late 17th century, with eaves that were raised in the late 19th century. They were restored around 1939 by the architect Clough Williams Ellis for Mrs. Anthony Gillson of Cornwell Manor. The cottages are constructed from roughly coursed limestone rubble and feature a concrete tile roof.

The buildings have a basic L-plan layout, with the north range oriented east-west and extended at right angles to the south on the east side in the late 17th century. They are one storey high with an attic. The south side of the north range includes two 19th-century casement windows with wooden lintels at the center, and doorways on either side that have 20th-century conical stone slate hoods. The left doorway has a boarded door, while the right has a glazed door. There is a small casement window just below the eaves to the right of the right window, a gabled half-dormer at the center, and a gabled dormer at the bottom of the roof slope to the left. A tapering rubblestone ridge stack, added by Clough Williams Ellis, is located to the left of center.

Attached to the left gable end is a slightly lower range. The rear of the north range features 19th-century leaded casements on the left and two 20th-century windows on the right. There is a gabled dormer at the bottom of the roof slope to the left of center, with a straight joint to the left, and a gabled half-dormer to the left. Inside, the east range has a chamfered spine beam in the ground-floor room. These cottages are included for their group value.
