Description

9 and 10 Cornwell is a house that has been divided, dating from the mid to late 17th century and restored around 1939 by Clough Williams Ellis for Mrs. Anthony Gillson of Cornwell Manor. It is constructed of roughly coursed limestone rubble and features a stone slate roof. The building has two storeys and an attic, with four chamfered leaded-mullion windows on each floor. All windows have three lights, except for one with four lights to the right and one with two lights to the left of the left doorway. Both doorways, including the one on the right, have chamfered four-centred arches, with 20th-century plank doors that have glazed panels at the top and 20th-century bracketed flat stone hoods. There are prominent sloping buttresses to the right of the second doorway from the left and the right doorway, along with two hip-roofed leaded dormers in the roof slope to the left. The building also features tapering rubblestone integral end stacks and a ridge stack to the left. On the ground floor of the right gable end, there is a chamfered three-light mullion window with a dripstone, and a chamfered rectangular window on the first floor to the right. The interior could not be inspected during the resurvey in September 1987, but it is reported to have been substantially altered by Clough Williams Ellis.
