Description
The Black Horse Public House is a building that dates from the late 16th century, with a refronting and extension that occurred in the late 18th century. It is constructed of coursed limestone rubble and features a gabled Welsh slate roof, with a stone left end stack finished in brick and a brick right end stack. The building has a U-plan layout with rear wings and stands two storeys high, presenting a three-window range.
The entrance is marked by a timber lintel above an early 19th-century six-panelled door, which has two glazed panels and is sheltered by a flat stone hood. To the left of the door, there is a mid-19th-century sash window with a chamfered timber lintel, and the outer bays feature mid-19th-century canted bay windows. The first floor has two early 19th-century eight-pane sashes, each topped with keyed flat stone arches. The left gable end includes a blocked late 16th-century window and a hollow-chamfered window, while the right gable end has an early to mid-19th-century bay window at the first-floor level.
The rear wings, built in the 18th century from similar materials, include a left wing that was originally a store, featuring a timber lintel over a plank door and a brick lateral stack. Inside, there is a chamfered bressumer over an open fireplace on the left side. The first floor has not been inspected but is expected to have features of interest.
