Description
The Bay Tree Hotel is a burgage house, previously known as Tanfield House, which was owned by the Tanfield family in 1580. The current structure dates from the late 17th century and underwent restoration and alterations around 1936. It features a freestone base and a Cotswold stone roof, with a gabled front and weathered coping on the gables. There are large square end stacks, with three on the left and two on the right, both topped with joint cornices. The main block has three gables, and the windows are framed in 20th-century oak, consisting of three and four lights with stone drips. The central doorway is Tudor-arched, has a drip, and is fitted with a restored oak door. There is a two-bay 20th-century extension designed in a similar style, featuring stone mullion windows and patterned lead glazing. Inside, the cross-passage slopes down to a rear door, with a rear passage similar to that at The Lamb. Both front rooms have Tudor arch fireplaces, while the rear room to the northwest boasts a fine Siena marble bolection fireplace. The rear courtyard once included an early to mid-19th-century cross-wing and two rear extensions, with the extensions to the eastern alleyway being irregular.
