KIDDINGTON WITH ASTERLEIGH KIDDINGTON SP4122 10/70 Boat house approx. 75m SE of Kiddington Hall

  • II

Boat house. Circa 1850. Timber-framed with pyramidal metal-covered roof. Octagonal plan; in a rustic style. Two storeys. Open ground floor with rustic arcading, open first floor with rustic arcading and balustrade, and roof with scalloped valencing and wooden finial. Boarded on 3 sides to rear. Interior: ground floor with brick and stone segmental-arched structure to rear. First floor walls and roof covered with old printing blocks. Boarded door to rear. The boat house stands on the north side of the lake in Kiddington Park. It probably dates from the mid-C19 when much work was carried out at Kiddington Hall (q.v.). The lake was probably formed in the mid-C18 when Capability Brown made some alterations to the park. (Buildings of England: Oxfordshire, pp669-70; Kiddington park and gardens are included in H.B.M.C.E. Register of Parks and Gardens at grade II)
